High Desert Gravel Grinder 2017
Central Oregon is a mecca for road cycling for a reason. The amazing roads and cool local vibe coupled with unmatched hospitality provide cyclist with a winning cycling destination. Bend, Oregon is the center of the cycling scene and is proud to support the longest running professional cycling events in the country the Cascade Cycling Classic. The diversity of scenery will keep even those with the shortest attention spans completely mesmerized. The ride starts at the Bendistilery one of Oregon’s top makers of vodka and spirits. From there the ride will head north along the foothills of the Cascades. Riders will enjoy a mix of flat gravel and asphalt roads while viewing the massive mountains up close. The ride will head to Sisters, Oregon were participants will be split into two groups. Those hardy enough for the Big Grind will start the big grind up to the top of McKenzie Pass. In early June the upper portion of the McKenzie Pass Highway is still closed to motorist. It will have just been plowed out creating a unique experience as you ride between steep walls of snow cut by a massive snow blower. After reaching the top and taking a quick minute to enjoy breathtaking views you will have a fun decent back down to Sisters to rejoin the course with your fellow Medium Grinder riders. You will continue on with a variety of flat to rolling paved and gravel roads passing alfalfa fields, sage brush, and juniper forests and every once in a while the meandering Deschutes River.
